Introducing Lit Lists for Young Readers

Picture Books Celebrating Cultural Diversity

curated by Miss Becky, Youth Services Librarian

Welcome to a new weekly blog series, Lit Lists for Young Readers, where your Youth Librarians cultivate some fresh reads for your kiddos to dig in to!  These brief lists will highlight a variety of topics with titles available through our online Evergreen catalog.  Click the link and you’ll be able to place a hold on the titles right away with your Library card.  Check out one or all of them!

First up, you’ll discover a list of picture books that celebrate cultural diversity.  You may notice that these stories use the concept of “mirrors and windows,” which is an important practice in children’s literature.  Books that act as mirrors allow children to see themselves reflected in the world.  Books that act as windows offer children a peek in-to cultures and experiences outside of their own lives, encouraging a better understanding of the diverse, multicultural world we live in!

Children of all ages can explore these titles that celebrate some of the many different cultures and traditions in our world.
