Advancing Racial Equity Grant Awarded to HMMPL

In August, the Library was awarded a grant from Indiana Humanities to boost sections of our collection focused on the topic of racial equity. The grant was developed by Indiana Humanities in response to the death of George Floyd and the ensuing protests that occurred this summer across the nation.  The goal of awarding the grant is to help Hoosiers think, read and talk about racial injustice and systemic racism and to support libraries as key public humanities organizations in this work.

Materials for both youth and adults were selected from a list developed by librarians, humanities scholars and Indiana Humanities staff in consultation with Central Indiana Community Foundation’s “Tools for Accountability,” and resource lists provided by Booklist (a publication of the American Library Association).  The list was also reviewed by the Indianapolis Public Library’s Diversity & Inclusion and Center for Black Literature & Culture staff.

You can locate the new materials on display in the adult services and youth services areas or ask a librarian!

This project is made possible by a grant from Lilly Endowment.
