The Epic Crush of Genie Lo by F.C. Yee

While a bit on the tall side, overall Genie Lo is your typical overachieving teenager, attending private school in California and aspiring to crack the Harvard admissions code.  Everything’s normal until demons straight from Chinese folklore start attacking her city.  The handsome and mysterious new student Quentin Sun suddenly bursts into Genie’s life, turning her average life upside down when he tells her she is more special than she ever could imagine.  With Quentin’s guidance and training, Genie may just be able to harness her new-found powers and put an end to the impending demon invasion.  Interwoven with Chinese mythology and a modern twist, this novel skillfully blends action, fantasy, romance, and the real struggles of high school students striving for their place in the nation’s best colleges.

Listeners of Marie Lu’s Warcross series and MaryJanice Davidson’s Undead series will recognize narrator Nancy Wu’s style of masterfully expressive reading that engages readers not only with the story itself but the emotions within as well.  Whether Genie is talking with one of her equally overachieving friends at school or fighting an evil demon alongside Quentin, Wu portrays each character and situation with excellent tones and characterization.  Genie’s bewilderment and often annoyance towards Quentin and his brash and later vulnerable sides are beautifully presented in Wu’s narration, making the characters come alive for the listener.
